The men’s basketball team defeated Susquehanna University 77-73 Saturday afternoon at the Long Center. The team improves to 18-3 overall and 8-2 in Landmark Conference play. The team has not lost in over a month and is on an eight-game winning streak.
The Royals overcame a 44-36 halftime deficit to win Saturday despite conference-leading scorer Ross Danzig sitting out the second half for Scranton with a head injury.
Head Coach Carl Danzig said the players on the team understand that when one player goes down, the other men have to step up to fill his void.
“It was great in the huddle, they just said let’s get it done, let’s rally for Ross, and that’s what they did,” Danzig said. “Sometimes it just takes a little incident to get the guys worked up a little bit and maybe Ross going down got the guys a little bit jacked up.”
Four players scored in double figures for the Royals, led by sophomore forward Brendan Boken with 20 points and nine rebounds. Boken received this week’s Landmark Conference Player of the Week award, his second award of the season.
Senior guard Tommy Morgan added 17 points, 6 rebounds and four assists.
Scranton scored the first 10 points of the second half, led by back-to-back three-pointers by Barr and Klingman, to take a 46-44 lead with 15:31 to play.
Assistant Coach Joe Mihalich said the veterans stepped up in the second half to lead the team.
“We have great senior leadership, great captains, and they just got us going in the second half,” Mihalich said.
The Royals will host a semifinal game in the Landmark Conference playoffs Feb. 26. The Royals travel to play Catholic University at 4 p.m. Saturday in a crucial  conference game.
Senior captain Mike Marchman said the team will decide where it finishes in the conference.
“We’re playing our best ball at the right time…we control our own destiny,” Marchman said.
