The Men and Women for Octaves a capella club will host its 15th anniversary concert this spring semester.
The concert will be 6 p.m. May 11 on the fourth floor of the DeNaples Center, with family and friends in attendance to support the a capella singers. The Men and Women for Octaves is an a capella performance organization at the University of Scranton where students can come together to make music and form new connections.
Royal Harmony, an all-female group, and The Scrantones, a co-ed group, are the two student-run singing groups. They have been hard at work practicing twice a week during the semester making music with only their voices.
The club performs two concerts each academic year, featuring a wide variety of music. This semester, Royal Harmony prepared repertoire ranging from Ariana Grande to Aretha Franklin. The Scrantones performed songs by Radiohead and the Bee Gees.
“It’s been such a fun time. I’ve loved every single song we have ever done,” Elaena Pappas, co-director of Royal Harmony said.
A capella has grown to be more than just a performance club for some members. Those graduating in May will remember their A capella experience.
One of these seniors is Grace Nitowski. Nitowski is the president of Men and Women for Octaves.
“A capella means so much to me. When I graduate from the university next year it’s going to be one of the first things I tell people about. It’s a great thing here at Scranton and not a lot of schools have it. It’s really become a second family for me,” Nitowski said.
