The Everyday with Emma

Hi Emma, I'm trying to learn how to do makeup. What are some tips and tricks that might help me get better?

------------

Hi friend. I started doing makeup in high school so I feel experienced enough to share my thoughts.

My first suggestion would be to start off slow learning the basics. I first started with applying blush and mascara. What helped me learn the most was YouTube videos. I remember watching one over and over until I learned the mascara wand technique the video was demonstrating.

TikTok would be another easy way to learn. Especially when it comes to blush, understanding your face shape is beneficial. TikTok has makeup placement filters that can be helpful to try. I place my blush in an upward motion on the tops of my cheekbones because that is where I found it is the most flattering.

For eyeliner I would suggest using an eyeliner pencil instead of liquid eyeliner. The pencil is much easier to control so it is perfect for beginners. A couple cotton swabs can help refine any mistakes to your eyeliner if needed. For those looking for a softer eye look, a brown eyeliner pencil will accomplish this while achieving the look of lined eyes.

Another suggestion is to begin first with cheaper makeup you can find at a Target or RiteAid. Learning makeup is a process. Until you are comfortable using the products and know what makeup you like to wear, I would avoid purchasing more expensive makeup brands that can be found at Ulta or Sephora. My makeup is a blended range of price points.

Lastly, find the foundation or concealer shade meant for you. You can swatch the shades on your skin to determine which one properly matches your skin. This will help you buy a more realistic shade and elevate your makeup look.

Makeup takes time and practice so do not give up and keep trying until you are satisfied with the results. Remember friend that the makeup does not make you beautiful. It just amplifies your natural beauty. It is a form of art in itself. Whatever makes you feel confident and happy is the right way to go. Good luck!
