College Party Culture: Scrantacon

The University of Scranton is renowned for its academic rigor and values-based education. It also offers a vibrant social scene that combines the energy of college life with a strong sense of community.

While academics and service are central to the student experience, social life plays an equally important role, reflecting the university's balanced approach to student development. Beyond campus-run events, the college-wide party culture also serves as a significant social outlet, fostering connections and memorable experiences among students. ‘

Scranton’s party culture, compared to larger state schools, is more intimate and rooted in personal connections. The absence of traditional Greek life shifts the focus from fraternity and sorority parties to smaller gatherings hosted by student groups, sports teams and close-knit circles of friends. Sports houses, often home to student-athletes, are popular locations for larger events and serve as informal hubs for socializing.

Students in off-campus housing often host social events, creating a lively yet manageable environment for upperclassmen to unwind. Local bars and venues in downtown Scranton also cater to students of legal drinking age, offering spaces for socializing in a responsible setting.

The University takes a clear stance on alcohol consumption, particularly underage drinking. University Policies are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, with strict enforcement in residence halls and university-sponsored events. Organizations like the Center for Health Education and Wellness (CHEW) actively promote substance-free activities, encouraging students to enjoy their college experience without relying on alcohol.

By fostering this culture, the University of Scranton creates a supportive environment for its students. This allows them to thrive both academically and socially while making responsible choices.

One of the standout events on Scranton’s fall semester calendar is “Scrantacon,” an annual celebration that brings students together to mark the holiday season.

This festive tradition offers a fun and spirited way for students to connect and kick off the holiday season. This Christmas-themed event is a favorite among students from the University of Scranton, Marywood University and Lackawanna College, offering a fun and social way to unwind before finals.

The University of Scranton, though not affiliated with Scrantacon, encourages its students to prioritize safety and make thoughtful choices during such festivities.

What sets Scrantacon apart is its unique blend of creativity and community. Students get into the spirit by donning festive outfits like ugly Christmas sweaters, cozy onesies, Santa hats, reindeer antlers and inventive holiday-themed costumes like Jesus or Mary.

More than just a party, Scrantacon is a tradition that connects students with the broader Scranton community, creating opportunities for camaraderie and shared celebration. For college students, it is a chance to embrace the season, enjoy a break from academic pressures and wrap up the semester with a night to remember.
