Jesuit identity is a central aspect of education at the university, and it is evident in many ways.
The Society of Jesus, founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola many centuries ago, have adopted several foundational values which are taught at Jesuit institutions such as our own. Some of these phrases include “Cura Personalis” (care for the whole person), “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” (for the greater glory of God), and “Magis” (choosing the greatest good). These words and phrases are not just meant to be taglines, but rather guiding forces for students to incorporate into their time here at Scranton and embody in their lives beyond.
One of the university’s initiatives to deepen student’s understanding of and appreciation for these values is Jesuit Identity Week, running through Oct. 17-26, 2025.
This week-long, ‘Mission Possible’-themed, event seeks to educate the campus community about Jesuit values, history and identity according to Royal News.
Students can participate in events such as Ignatian Yoga on Oct. 20, Speed Faithing on October 21, and Mass with Marina on Oct. 24 amongst others. More events and details can be found at the University Mission and Ministry website. Free T-Shirts and prizes are available at some events.
As the late-great Fr. Pedro Arrupe S.J. said in his 1973 speech, “it is our duty to be people for and with others” - a notion you can certainly learn more about if you attend some of the events at this year’s Jesuit Identity Week.
