SCRANTON — University students are embracing the warmer weather with music blasting on the off-campus streets and study sessions on the Dionne Greene.
UV 7 practically means summer in Scranton and students are taking advantage of the sun while it is here.
Scranton has experienced record temperatures for the month of April with highs of up to 82 degrees. Studies from the National Weather Service show that Scranton low temperatures in April usually average at around 41 degrees with highs averaging at around 60 degrees.
The warmer weather has allowed students to take a break from studying and spend more time with their peers. When not at clinicals, junior nursing student from Binghamton, New York, Sophia Ruspantini has been spending the sunny days playing games and listening to music with her friends on their off-campus house porch.
“I spent every second I could outside. I did homework outside a lot and tried to even study outside of Gavigan,” Ruspantini said.
Junior psychology student from Howell, New Jersey, Julia Cavallero agrees with Ruspantini and credits the warm weather for her positive attitude and new tan lines.
“The warmer weather made me feel alive again. It got rid of the seasonal depression real fast,” Cavallero said.
While everyone loves the nice weather, there is no denying it can lead to procrastination. Pushing off assignments and sacrificing studying time for leisure can become a real struggle for many students, especially with finals approaching.
Junior electrical engineering student from Oceanside, New York, Marie Viola isn’t worried about the weather affecting her studying time for finals.
“I feel like I am just as productive when it is nice out from when it is cold out. When you are in engineering, you can’t really give up studying time even when the weather is nice,” Viola said.
Ruspantini tends to disagree with Viola's statement saying she usually prolongs doing work when the weather is good.
“It’s so much harder to do work when it is nice because I will see people outside, running around on the Greene and I just want to be doing that instead,” Ruspantini said.
Current weather forecasts show that temperatures will drop to typical April average temperatures later in the week. The warm front may
have been brief, but the chance of it coming back with Scranton’s
unpredictable weather is always a possibility.
As of right now, it is too early to predict finals week temperatures, but
balance is key. Make sure to keep your same positive study habits while
taking time for yourself. Taking walks outside away from the library or finding a good location outside to study may be your save and grace this final season.
