Silent disco provides alternative to attending parties

Benjamin Camp

SCRANTON — Music enables a party to feel alive, but it can feel too intense for people who dislike loud noises playing from the speakers.

There is an alternative option that enables people to enjoy music peacefully, which is silent disco.

This form of disco involves people listening to music with their headphones on, while a DJ controls the music. Unlike a traditional speaker that only plays one song from the computer, the headphones give people three stations of music to choose. One station plays pop music, while the other two stations play electronic music and R&B.

Just like at a party, people are able to dance in the room and they can still talk to their peers, but there is a chance that everyone is not listening to the same song. If you end up playing the same song on your headphones as your peers, there are three colors, yellow, red and blue, to indicate which stations are playing.

Aside from the quieter ambience compared to that of a traditional party, the scene is less chaotic with there not being hurdles of people. Instead, there are small groups of people having enough room to dance.

The University of Scranton Programming Board, USPB, hosted this as their first event of the Spring 2025 semester.

“We put on events for all of the Scranton community, especially our students. I hope they have a good time,” said Mary Kate McDade, vice chair of special events.

Silent disco encourages people to make new friends while enjoying listening to music. McDade can relate to attendees with meeting new people at USPB events.

“This is where I met a lot of my friends, and that’s why a lot of my board is here as well,” McDade said.

Another student, Fanelysse De La Rosa, provides the positives of attending silent disco. She does not like going to parties, because they are too loud and there is toomuch going on. For silent disco, there is one highlight she enjoys.

“Probably when I started dancing with random strangers, that was fun,” De La Rosa said.

The vendor that provides the resources for these events is called Shut Up Just Dance. They offer bookings for multiple styles of parties, especially college parties on their website with their contact information.

If someone wants to abstain from the boisterous party life and host their ideal peaceful dance party, the number for Shut Up Just Dance is 1-571-317-0869.
