SCRANTON — Roses are red. Violets are blue. College students are broke, but there's help for you.
Finding affordable things to do for Valentine's Day is a struggle, but there are last-minute events and ideas to do this weekend whether you are single or taken.
Scranton offers a variety of restaurants, from fancy Italian places like Casa Bella to student-favorite sushi spots like Yume.
As a college student, price matters when picking out a restaurant. Many students live on an unstable income, which forces them to create strict budgets.
Liana Peralta, a senior early primary education major at the University of Scranton, is no stranger to budgeting her life and has worked on campus since she was a freshman.
“I love money and I am a very money concious person, so I am always thinking about how to save,” Peralta said.
Peralta has been in a relationship since high school and knew many restaurants were going to be fully booked this weekend. She celebrated her Valentine's Day the week before with dinner at Olive Garden.
“Bryan (her boyfriend) and I don’t do anything crazy for Valentine’s Day because I personally don’t care for flowers and all that stuff. We just like to spend time with each other,” Peralta said.
Procrastination as a college student and booking reservations for Valentine’s Day dinner do not go together. Walking into hot commodity places in downtown Scranton, like Sambucca Italian Grille and Bar Pazzo on Valentine’s Day is not an option. But Scranton and neighboring towns offer different events and activities that you can participate in without reservations.
One activity offered Valentine’s Day morning is the South Side Farmers Market. Located at 526 Cedar Ave., Scranton, the market will feature several Valentine's Day themed treats and trinkets you can purchase. A day of shopping is a perfect activity to do with some friends and even loved ones. The farmers market opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 1 p.m. For information, visit the Lackawanna County Northeast Pennsylvania Visitors Bureau.
Another activity is a Valentine's Day-themed country line dancing event. Blind Cat Beer Co. in Pittson will welcome Christine form Whiskey Way Line Dancing to teach a line dancing class Feb. 13. Entry is free if you purchase a drink. Patrons must be 21+ years of age to attend. The event starts at 7 p.m. For information, visit DiscoverNEPA.com.
If you don’t feel like venturing outside, there are plenty of things you can do in the comfort of your own home. Cooking together, doing a craft, watching movies and board games are just a few examples.
Marie Viola, a junior electrical engineering major at the University of Scranton, plans to spend the day with her roommates.
“We haven’t decided what movie we are going to watch yet, but I am really excited to paint and eat the cookies my roommate makes, “ Viola said.
Single or taken, Valentine’s Day allows us to thank and show love to those who are important to us. If we remember that, the day can become everyone’s favorite holiday.
“As long as Bad Bunny music is playing while we paint and I am with my friends, I will be happy,” Viola said.
