Students run small businesses in Scranton

By Morgan Masters, Staff Writer

SCRANTON — Look on Instagram and student-run small businesses are taking over Scranton.

One Scranton student had an idea to run his own business for years. He found out his roommate had a heat press, and the clothing brand CAVO was born.

Junior communication major Mike Carrea is an athlete on the University of Scranton Track and Field team. With his roommate’s heat press and encouragement from teammates, Carrea began Cavo on Jan. 22.

“It is nice to have teammates support you. I don’t have a ton of following on it yet. It is something I have to be patient about and just consistently working on, and then eventually we will get there,” Carrea said.

University of Scranton faculty specialist Jack Strain talked about how business communication can be used to teach students strategies to achieve their goals.

Strain acknowledged the reality of running a small business as a student.

“It takes a lot of energy, a lot of time and it is a big commitment. If they are willing to do something so young, I can’t help but just applaud them,” Strain said.

Strain recognized that the power of social media can be a useful business tool.

“Young people have these amazing tools of social media, in particular, to promote themselves and to promote their business. I think it is fantastic that they are taking what they learn in the classrooms and putting it into practice,” Strain said.

Carrea uses Instagram as CAVO’s main marketing tool. On Instagram, he is able to post pricing, new drops and how to order. Instagram allows him to engage with a familiar audience and find new followers.

Carrea said he is only using Instagram to market right now; however, once he has proof of stability, he will create a website and emails for drops.

CAVO sells seasonal sweatshirts and T-shirts, and the tagline is “Remove the Noise.” Carrea described the clothes as streetwear. Carrea said with each CAVO drop, expect new products to match the season.

Carrea, who creates and ships out the orders by hand, said CAVO shipped out 30 orders in one week.

“I shipped 30 out last week. Some went to Colorado, Florida, Jersey and many different places,” Carrea said.

CAVO’s Instagram is @madebycavo. The clothing catalog of the first drop is posted. Sweatshirts cost $60 and shirts cost $30. CAVO’s direct message inbox is open for orders.
