The Women’s Electric City Ultimate Disc team competed at the regional level for the first time in the program’s history.
The ultimate disc team played Haverford College at the beginning of April. They ranked sixth in the conference at Haverford and earned a 3-1 record.
The team got ranked 24th on Ultiworld, a news source for ultimate disc, and they secured their spot in the regional competition. They drove to Swarthmore College next full of excitement and ready to make their mark on Scranton sports.
At the regional competition in Swarthmore, the women started off strong with an exciting win. The team beat Lehigh University, ranked 14th in the nation, and advanced to the finals.
Alyssia Malanga, sophomore occupational therapy major, made the game-winning point against Lehigh with an assist from teammate Mimi Rosinski, another sophomore occupational therapy major.
The Scranton team then prepared to battle the retuning champions: Haverford College. The women lost the game to Haverford, but they still managed to secure the title of second in the region.
Plus, the Electric City Ultimate Disc team moved up to 19th on Ultiworld.
Katie Olafson, a senior secondary education major, said that despite having the smallest roster at both tournaments and being the only team without a coach, their hard work paid off.
“My teammates showed grit and energy and I’m so excited to see where the underclassmen take this team next year,” Olafson said.
After such a successful season, the women are ready to sit back, relax and prepare for next year.
Trish Murtagh, a senior nursing student, said that the team became like a family to her.
“When I joined the team, I never knew how much could come from just throwing around a piece of plastic…I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the team and believe we’ll be seeing them back at regionals next year,” Murtagh said.
Students, make sure you keep an eye on this team next year. Who knows what their future holds.
