Film Thoughts with Sam: “Wonka”

Welcome back to Film Thoughts with Sam, where I watch a film and give you my thoughts on it.

“Wonka” hit theaters Dec. 15. The film is directed by Paul King.

The stars of the film include Timothée Chalamet, who plays Willy Wonka; Calah Lane, who plays Noodle; Olivia Coleman, who plays Mrs. Scrubitt; and Hugh Grant who plays the Oompa-Loompa.

If I could describe this movie in one word: fun. While the “fun” may be a short word to use, it is hard not to call it fun. It is filled with happy singing and dancing numbers and can keep a smile on one's face as they watch it. I sometimes am not a huge fan of movie musicals, but this one I was. The music numbers added to the quality of the movie and made it easier to pay attention. I was a bit skeptical going into the film, because I am a fan of the original “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” from 1971. I do not love remakes, so I went into the movie not knowing what to expect.

Despite that, I am glad I made the decision to go and see the adaptation. I always enjoy it when I go into a movie with an open mind, and when I come out of it with my expectations being set higher than I thought they could.

According to the Internet Movie Database, the film received seven out of 10 stars.

I would rate “Wonka” nine out of 10 stars. It made me laugh, I enjoyed listening to the music, and enjoyed everyone who was in the cast. The songs in the soundtrack were catchy and overall made the film much better to watch.

I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Willy Wonka and movie musicals. Even if you are not a fan of movie musicals, maybe give this one a try.
