The University of Scranton Programming Board returned to New York City on March 30 to give Scranton students the Broadway experience.
USPB’s Campus Traditions Committee – run by co-chairs Sean Davis and Cecelia Russell – took students by bus to see Broadway’s “&Juliet,” a twist on Shakespeare’s classic, “Romeo and Juliet.”
Davis, a junior business administration major from Morristown, New Jersey, said this trip was one of his favorite Broadway trips yet, and it went off without a hitch.
“The bus ride to and from the city was seamless, and theshow itself was incredible,” he said.
The musical follows William Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, as they rewrite the story of Romeo and Juliet – at Anne’s request. They make a very major change: Juliet does not dieat the end, and instead of Romeo’s death being the end of her story, it is only the beginning.
The musical is a jukebox musical – which means it features popular music rather than songs composed solely for the musical. The songs in the show include hits by Katy Perry, Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys.
Students had some time before and after the show as well to explore the city. Davis said he and his friends enjoyed Raising Cane’s for lunch and the Hard Rock Café for dinner.
Katie Marchetti, a sophomore nursing major from Trumbull, Connecticut, also attended the Broadway trip. She said she enjoyed the music and dancing in the show, and she also got to walk around the city and shop with her friends.
“It was so nice to have a day off where the only thing you were thinking about was where to go and what to do next,” she said.
Tickets for the show were $35 and included transportation. USPB runs this trip once a semester to offer students a less expensive way to experience Broadway. Previous shows have included “Aladdin,” “Hadestown,” “Spamalot” and “The Great Gatsby.”
