The recent nice weather has University of Scranton students feeling good.
Scranton is known for cold, damp weather, with residents and students often facing heavy rain, snow and strong winds.
University freshmen are advised to pack rain boots and coats and, in some cases, an extra umbrella in case theirs blows away or breaks.
This past week the weather has been better, with temperatures reaching 77 degrees, a dramatic difference from the usual cold and rain.
With the warm weather, University students are able to enjoy time outside.
“I feel rejuvenated,” said biology major Olivia Zrebiec. “I just sat on the green on a picnic blanket with my friends for three hours. The sunlight feels so nice. I feel motivated to do work. Everything's looking up. I feel great.”
Lucas Dhoni, a counseling human services major, also experienced a lift in his mood and an increase in productivity.
“I've been spending a lot more time outside and even doing my schoolwork.” Dhoni said. “Before my shift, I just stood outside for a few minutes just to get more sun. It's just really, really nice from what we've been getting last week.”
The improvement in mood is shared by many University students. Many have shared how their mood has lifted compared to last semester due to the nicer weather.
Productivity is a different matter. Students on campus explained that due
to the warm weather many would rather relax and spend time outside.
“I feel less motivated to do schoolwork,” said Margaret Elmir. “I've been going on walks throughout campus. But I feel so happy, genuinely.”
Quentin Peggin, a mechanical engineering major, skipped class to enjoy the nice weather.
“Yeah, I skipped a class today to go on a run. It was just too nice out," Peggin said. “I feel like I'm in a much better mood, but I've also been less productive, which I think is a worthwhile trade-off."
Although rain is expected the rest of the week, fairer weather is expected to return soon.
