Track and Field team racing for first

By Anna Cawthern, Staff Writer

SCRANTON — The University of Scranton Track and Field team travels to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania for the Indoor Landmark Conference meet this weekend with high hopes of bringing back the team’s first ever Landmark Championship.

Scranton will go head-to-head with eight teams in its conference with dreams of returning to the Electric City with some hardware.

The Scranton Track and Field team is a joint men’s and women’s team that competes at the same meets but runs in separate events for their own respective categories.

Going into the Landmark Conference Indoor meet, polls have shown that the women’s team is expected to finish in second place while the men are set to finish in fifth. Both teams have put up impressive performance this year with several athletes breaking school records and program records.

One specific athlete who has broken several records and who will be running this weekend is Sam Sharrow. Sharrow is a senior on the women’s team and most recently broke the school record for the 300 meters at Marc Deneault Invitational in Ithaca, New York. She tallied a time of 40.99 seconds beating out the original school record. She is set to compete in the 60-meter dash.

Another athlete who broke a school record at Marc Deneault Invitational and will be running this weekend is Olivia Miller. Miller is a senior on the team and was able to record a time of 1:16:88 in the 500 meters. Going into this weekend, Miller was also awarded Landmark Conference Track Athlete of the Week.

According to the Landmark Championship Poll, the indoor women’s team has a high probability of placing in second place at the meet with Moravian University just beating them out. Claudia Huber, a junior on the team, believes their team has a big chance of overtaking Moravian and is not wasting their opportunity to win.

“With the chance we have, everyone is working at 100% right now, especially the seniors. They are full in because this is their last year,” Huber said.

The team has never won a Landmark Championship. Last year, the women’s team placed third, the highest they have ever performed. Freshman thrower Brooke Engler was still in high school when they hit this milestone but is excited for this weekend considering the team’s chances.

“Us throwers, we are always there for the support and it’s exciting to see our friends do very well. It’s just really special for me no matter if I am not competing or not,” Engler said.

Both Huber and Engler said they are proud of the team this year.

“It would mean everything if we won. It would be insane just to feel that our team is real, and we are taken seriously since we are the biggest team on campus and we do not get a lot of funding,” Huber said.

They’re preparing for this weekend with many ice baths and recovery days.
