Pre-Vet Club members Hannah Adams and Abby Drozdik organized a bake sale to raise funds for animal sanctuary Billy's New Hope Barn.
Billy’s New Hope Barn in Honesdale was founded in October 2011 by Marcie and Jerry Bunting, who made it their mission to care for neglected and abused farm animals. They want people to see that farm animals are not just food, their website states.
Jerry Bunting died in a farm accident in July 2024. Due to financial and emotional strain, Marcie decided to close the barn and relocate the animals living there.
“She needs a little bit of monetary help and donations, and she needs help finding safe homes for the animals,” said junior club member Hannah Adams. "We're collecting money to help her cover any expenses needed to get the animals to a good location."
After discovering Marcie’s situation, club members set up a baked goods booth to raise donations.
“A bunch of members of the Pre-Vet Club came together and baked a bunch of goods for the sale to raise money," said Abbey Drozdik, another junior member.“We saw the owner's post about how they were closing and that they needed donations and stuff, so we figured that this was a good way to raise money.”
In an email, club President Julianne May said how important helping the sanctuary is to the club.
“As pre-vet students, animals have a special place in our hearts and we knew we needed to help in some way,” May wrote. “We had a bake sale on Wednesday to try to help alleviate some of the costs Marcie is facing in this process.”
Although the bake sale was only scheduled to run Wednesday, April 8, both Drozdik and Adam encouraged people to donate directly to Billy’s New Hope Barn.
“If people want to donate but couldn't make it to the bake sale, they always need the help. Billy's New Hope Barn has a Facebook page where you can find a linkto directly donate to Marcie and the barn,” said Drozdik.
Billy’s New Hope Barn also has a website, billysnewhopebarn.com, where people can donate or sign up to volunteer and help around the barn.
